There are so many mornings where you wake up and realize that you just aren’t where you want to be in life. Something is inside you, telling you to be true to yourself.
Your conscience is telling you that it’s your time to get your mojo back. Time to make a change. (If not now, when? Right?)
- You are unhappy making the same money.
- You want to take your business in an entirely new direction.
- Or maybe you are not happy with your job. (how many bathroom breaks can you take!) You want to run your own show and not have to answer to your corporate boss.
You want to make a cold turkey change and just stop everything and do something totally different. You want to break free. Enough is enough.
I see so many people:
- Quit their job to start a business
- Want to take their business in a new direction but…
They forget about the money.
Breaking free and having blind faith that the money will magically show up is a recipe for disaster.
- It ends costing more money to start a new business.
- It sometimes takes longer to bring in the sales that you thought you would.
Sometimes you have to learn on the job. Failing and learning from your mistakes is really important. That usually costs time and money.
So… Don’t forget about the cash flow. It will buy you time when you make these changes. It is so much easier to make a business or career change when you have money coming in. Don’t quit your day job until you have enough money saved up to fund your living expenses for a while. Or if you are en entrepreneur, don’t abandon your core business and go off on a new direction without cash flow coming in. Make these changes gradually. You will still feel alive. You will sleep better. You might not have as much financial stress.
I am all about embracing uncertainty and going for it. I want you to jump off a cliff into the ocean of unknown. But I want you to do it with a teeny weeny life vest on. You may think it’s a risk to stay put and do nothing (I do!). But it’s also a risk to jump ship with no money coming in. Let the journey begin. Hit singles and doubles instead of triples and home runs. For you non-baseball fans, that means take small and medium size risks consistently. Shoot for the moon and be smart about it.
If you are an employee, build your new business at nights and weekends while you are getting paid from corporate. If you are an entrepreneur, don’t leave your only source of cash flow while you are changing your business model.
So are you managing to build a new life for yourself while trying to keep the cash flow coming in? What piece of advice do you have for others? Share with us your perspective.
